Mother Bear and Baby Bear

History of IPC

Back when my daughter was born in 2014, I felt overwhelmed because I did not know how to support my child or how to be a good mother. After staring at her big brown eyes for months, I knew that I wanted more – more for her and more for myself.

I knew I needed to be better for my daughter, so I started to look within and realized I needed to make a change. I decided to go back to university and pursue what I was naturally good at, sales and marketing.

Now here I am in my final year, on the cusp of graduation, and I am proud of the accomplishments I have achieved over my post-secondary educational journey. I strongly believe I would not be where I am today without the support of my family, friends, and my beautiful daughter.

As my journey is now coming to an end, I’ve realized there are parents out there just like me who might be struggling to believe that graduating from university while raising a child is possible.

This got me thinking, ‘What if there was a place where Indigenous parents could go to receive the support they needed to succeed in university?’ And just like that, the Indigenous Parents Community was born.

I want to share my experiences through the last year of my university education, how I started a not-for-profit business, finding my way through my professional field, and being a mom, all while reclaiming my Indigenous identity through my Kelly Kristin blog.
